Question by John Horton: What to look for in when buying a used car wholesale ?
I’m looking into getting a new used car.
Pontiac Montana
I was wondering what I should listen and look for when I take it for a test drive ?
isn’t there a law that allows me to have the car serviced for problems by the dealer who had sold it to me ? Lemon law or something or other

Look at the answers to your other question first……………….For this Q: you are not buying the vehicle at the “wholesale” price – that is a gimmick that car lots use to try and make buyers think they are getting the best price ( which is not always the case ); you need to not only take the vehicle for a complete test drive, on all types of road surfaces, but also at highway speeds AND have a mechanic do complete inspections of all of the systems of the vehicle………….not having a mechanic do inspections would be throwing away your $$; lemon laws are not in effect for the vehicle you are considering ( only for new vehicles )

Question by kim s: I have a question about a used car that I bought?
Two weeks ago I bought a car from a dealer who buys his car from the auction in NH. I bought the van in MA where I live.. When I bought the car the check engine light was on, the owner said that he would fix it for me for free. Its been almost two weeks since I got the car and the owner i avoiding me. The only was he will talk to me is if I go to his house(35 min away). He told me to call him tomorrow morning because he said he should have the part in that I need. I honestly think that he going to avoid me until the 30 days is up. He told me that I didn’t have to make my first payment until the van passes inspection. What if anything can I do if he keeps avoiding passed the 30 day lemon law?
the thing is that the owner is by best friends uncle so I know who he is thats why I went to him. Also I found out if I bought any car over 0 the lemon law does apply. The code was the idle sensor

Hate to tell you, but lemon laws only apply to NEW cars. Why in the name of little green apples would you buy a car with the light on? The dealer isn’t going to fix it, and if you don’t pay they’ll repossess. Sorry.

Question by oscar: does the lemon law apply to a used car bought in a private sale in the state of kansas?
Best answer:
Answer by Ben Linus
The Kansas Lemon Law applies only to the original owner of the vehicle for a span of time not to exceed 12 months from the date of purchase. If you’re buying a used car in Kansas, you’re not the original owner so the Lemon Law doesn’t apply to used cars in Kansas.

Question by revengeissweet: Used jeep failed safety inspection 3 weeks after purchase. Does dealer have to pay for repairs?
SORRY!! This is long but I need to know what to do!!
I bought a used jeep Nov 18th in Mass. I live in RI. I have a 30 day warranty with a 100.00 deductible. Dealer didn’t have the title, said he would have it in 3 days but didn’t get it to me till the 25th. This made me ineligible for the 7 day lemon aid law for a full refund if it fails inspection.
The engine light came on the 19th. He had me bring it to his mechanic. They put in new spark plugs, a e vap hose and a purge valve hose(? not sure if that is the right thing) Engine light went off but came back on after 80 or so miles. Found it needed a ignition coil. I had also told him the back windshield wiper didn’t work and brake light was out. Sent me back to his mechanic. Agreed to pay for the wiper and break light but not the ignition coil. He said it wasn’t part of an inspection. It is and it would have failed without it (his mechanic told him that) I told him I would pay the 100 deductible and he had to pay the rest. He said HE would put a hundred towards it and I had to pay the rest! The mechanic only took a hundred from me.
Now, last week, it failed inspection. Emissions is fine but it failed for front breaks and front U joint. Got a quote of 250 to fix. I called him again about that and he basically flipped. I told him I talked to consumer affairs and they said he legally had to fix it.(which I really did, called the MASS number) He needed to talk to his partner and was supposed to call me back and didn’t. I called the next day…he said he would do the brakes but that he doesn’t think the U joint was part of an inspection and his partner was checking into it. He also said I couldn’t go back to the original mechanic he sent me too and that he would get to it in the next “week or two” My 30 day warranty will be up on the 18th. I think he is trying to wait till after that to tell me that he didn’t have to pay for it.
I understand the 7 day Lemon Aid Law but I’m confused about the whole failing inspection thing.
Doesn’t he LEGALLY have to pay for the repairs because it failed inspection, even if it is after the 7 days?? There is no way the brake pads went down to nothing and the U joint rotted in 3 weeks so those defects were there when I bought it.
By the way….he wanted me to bring it to a inspection station where it would have passed when we were arguing about the ignition coil. So this guy is a real jerk.
Before I call him back tomorrow I want to know what I’m talking about!!
Thank you so much for your time!
I forgot to add that I know I was STUPID when I bought this. Just want an answer to my question not a lecture on my stupidity. Believe me I’ve beaten myself up over this every day since I bought it!!!!!!!
IT is a 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4×4 with 112,000 miles on it.
I have been researching that law it just keeps talking about the 7 day thing.

lemon laws only apply to new cars – there should hve been a statement of warranty hanging in the window when yo bought this car – it will either tell you what is covered or say “as is” on the paper in inch high letters

Question by Vincent V.: Does the California Lemon Law cover used salvaged cars?
I recently bought a salvaged car from a small dealership and it has been giving me transmission problems. I’ve already taken it to them twice to repair it and it still gives me the same problem. I want to know if I qualify for the lemon law. Please help. Thanks

Lemon laws were never designed to cover stuff from a junk yard. Anyone who would buy a salvage vehicle should be aware that “salvage” is just a nice way to say “junk”. It’s sort of like calling a garbage collector a “sanitation engineer”. Sounds fancy but doesn’t change the facts.

whwn u have a service contract

“Lemon laws” are only for NEW cars, not used. If you have a service contract, have it serviced. If you mean you have a warranty, have it fixed.

Used cars, sold in any state, unless you got a written warranty with it when you bought it, as sold AS IS.
Lemon laws are very specific, and apply only to new cars under certain circumstances.

Question by TheDuke: Have you used the Ca. Lemon Law against Ford? Does the dealer have the power to exchange a bad car?
I have a 2007 Ford Ranger that has trans problems (they think). They have tried twice to fix it and it’s still at the dealership. I’m frustrated. Any suggestions? I live in California. Thanks

I dont know how it is in Cali. However from what Ive heard if a vehicle keeps going in for constant repairs on the same thing and within a certain time period it falls itnot the lemon law. The only thing I can suggest is found out if the lmon law is the same for the all the states.
